Text gets erased as I type

With both Outlook and Word, I occasionally find that, when inserting a character into a word, the new character erases the one in front of it. I presume I must have inadvertently hit a combination of keys but I don't know which. Is there any way of cancelling this feature apart from closing and reopening the program?

This behaviour is called overtype and is turned on by hitting the Ins key. Someone must have thought this feature very useful, but we often hit this key by accident and then find we have typed over half a line of text. It's a toggle switch, so giving the Ins key another (usually ill-tempered) thump turns it back off again. Unfortunately there's no way to disable the toggle altogether.
